The vision of the Cascadia Society is to develop a sustainable community together with people with developmental disabilities and to bring about the possibility for each person in the community to develop their innate potential. We live, play and work within the urban setting of North Vancouver to accomplish this. The community celebrates the striving of the human spirit in many ways. We honour the contribution each person makes to the community. The value of the contribution, work, is not related to remuneration.

Our vision requires both a healthy residential community and a vibrant centre for artisan crafts, training and therapy. Our future vision encompasses a community of about 5 homes and a Centre dedicated to the development of the potential of each individual.

Future Vision of the Cascadia Centre

• Provide a holistic program for people with developmental disabilities including work, cultural activities, artistic ventures and recreational activities.
• Cultural Outreach Program
• Retain highly trained and experienced coworkers
• Provide ongoing coworker training
• Maintain a high quality craft program with artisan craft masters
• Be an integral part of the support network for those who choose to affilitate with the Cascadia Society.

Facilities

Present:
The Cascadia Day Centre is in a large, old, (1911) character home with space for the artisan crafts, artistic activities and therapies. It is close to trails, a stream, park sites and a couple of blocks from a main bus route. It provides a supportive environment for all of our activities. We hope in the future to be able to build a purpose-built facility.

Developing the Cascadia Homes:

• Family Care Homes – five or six family style homes including people with developmental disabilities that are within walking distance of each other.
• Co-Housing Option – a housing development, which includes family care homes and others who wish to live in a community life style.
  • Suites for independent supported living
  • Family care home units: family style homes shared with people with developmental disabilities
  • Private home units: for people who wish to participate in the Cascadia community but who are not able to commit to full life sharing responsibilities
