Home Sharing Opportunities | Cascadia Community, North Vancouver, BC

Cascadia is an urban Camphill community located in the Central Lonsdale neighbourhood of North Vancouver. Rooted in Camphill ideals, we strive to create an environment where every person is recognized, valued, and supported to reach their full potential. We are currently seeking committed individuals for two distinct Home Sharing opportunities, each offering a meaningful way to support adults with developmental disabilities while becoming part of our wider life-sharing community.

Opportunity 1: Reverse Home Sharing Provider

We are seeking a long-term Home Sharing Provider to join our life-sharing community and make their home at one of our houses, supporting two women with developmental disabilities in a warm, community-oriented environment.

Both individuals attend Cascadia’s Day Program during the week and enjoy active participation in community life. One individual requires 24-hour support, including assistance with personal care, communication, mobility, and daily living activities (funded on level 5C). The second individual is more independent, works part-time, uses public transit independently, and benefits from guidance with day-to-day decision-making and community participation (funded on level 3A).

Responsibilities

  • Live in the house alongside the two companions.
  • Foster a safe, supportive, and meaningful home environment.
  • Provide daily support, including personal care, meal support, community outings, and relationship-building.
  • Work collaboratively with families, support networks, and the Cascadia team.
  • Participate in the values and rhythms of Camphill life and community building.

The Home

It is a spacious house located in Central Lonsdale, just a few blocks from shops, parks, public transit, and community amenities. The home includes individual bedrooms for each companion and the HSP, shared living and dining spaces, a separate sitting room, an office, and access to Cascadia’s beautiful community garden.

Opportunity 2: Home Sharing Provider in Your Own Home

We are also seeking a Home Sharing Provider who would welcome an individual with developmental disabilities into their own home and become part of our wider life-sharing community.

The individual is a long-time member of the North Shore community and has lived in home-sharing homes for many years. He attends Cascadia’s Day Program five days per week and enjoys playing basketball, swimming, and participating in social activities at home. He is verbal and able to express some of his needs and respond to simple questions (funded on level 4B).

The successful provider will create a stable, supportive, and welcoming home environment while assisting with daily living, community participation, and personal care needs.

Responsibilities

  • Provide personal care support, including bathing and assistance with dressing.
  • Support participation in the Day Program and community activities.
  • Administer medication three times daily.
  • Assist with communication, decision-making, and relationship-building.
  • Respond calmly and consistently to changes in emotional well-being and support needs.
  • Foster a safe, respectful, and meaningful home life.

Qualifications

We are looking for individuals who have:

  • Experience supporting people with developmental disabilities.
  • Strong communication and relationship-building skills.
  • Patience, flexibility, and a commitment to person-centred support.
  • A valid driver’s license and First Aid/CPR certification.

Additionally:

  • Kaspar House applicants should have experience providing personal care and supporting complex needs.
  • Individual Home Sharing applicants should have experience supporting individuals with mental health-related needs, experience providing higher levels of personal care, and the ability to establish and maintain clear, consistent, and respectful boundaries.

Requirements

Applicants must:

  • Be at least 19 years of age.
  • Be a Canadian Citizen or Permanent Resident and not require sponsorship in the future.
  • Be legally eligible to work in Canada.
  • Complete a satisfactory Home Study (screening process) and criminal record check.
  • Provide confirmation of good health from a physician.

Every day is a learning experience at Cascadia, a community where individuals with and without intellectual and developmental disabilities join together to build skills and enjoy artistic and recreational activities. Weaving, candle making, and pottery workshops, as well as artistic activities including painting, music, and drama fill most of our days. A connection to the earth is fostered in the garden program by growing seedlings for transplant, herbs for teas and cooking, vegetables and fruit for eating. The garden crew also cares for the beautiful gardens and yards around the Cascadia Centre and residences.

Our seasonal plays are another highlight of Cascadia life. These festival celebrations often combine the arts of producing creative backdrops, movement, and music. And each summer, the whole community works together to create a large scale installation or at times a performance art piece. Past projects include the intricate mosaics that form pathways and patios throughout our community, yarn paintings ornaments knit around and hung in the trees along our street, refurbishing and painting designs on instruments set throughout our neighbourhood for anyone who passes by to play.
